On January 17, 2020, the International Geosciences Union chose a new name for the geological period from 7.70 million to 1.26 million years ago: Chibanian. This is the first geological age named after a region of Japan (Chiba Prefecture). Part of the Itoigawa Geopark also formed in the Chibanian period, centered around Mt. Takamine in Itoigawa’s Uramoto Region.
At only 577 m, Mt. Takamine is a relatively small mountain, but it features a well-maintained climbing trail and is a popular local trekking area. This exhibition showcases Chibanian age rock samples collected from Mt. Takamine.
